'Cillindrome' was commissioned by Pentagon Brass from Rory Simmons, based on a painting by Christopher Janzen, artist-in-residence with the PTC Record Label.
'My aim in Cillindrome was to combine the knotty harmonic language of the brass writing of Hindemith and Stravinsky with the sweeping mood found in the cinematic sound design of Atticus Ross, Clark (of Warp Records) and David Torn, in a musical response to some visual artworks that I have found inspiring.
Cillindrome’s fusing of monochrome/line textures with a more emotive portrait style is reminiscent of the paintings of the American artist Chris Janzen. I was also inspired by the “collaborations” of Warhol, Basquiat and Clemente - in particular, their 1984 painting ‘Cilindrome’.
The piece brings together classical ideas of harmony and orchestration with a modern sensibility of how brass writing might be exploited and advanced. I listened to the beautiful early recordings of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, and then to Nine Inch Nails, and imagined how those two sound worlds could be fused.'
