Christopher Barrett is a tuba player, bandleader, poet and pioneer of the electric tuba. He is active as a freelance musician, composer, bandleader and teacher in London; playing in a variety both classical and non-classical contexts and teaching in schools all around the city. Chris has recently appeared on the UK number 1 single “Glitterball” with Ella Henderson, as well as performing with the London Chamber Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Arts Orchestra, Orchestra of St Paul’s, Orpheus Sinfonia, Oakland Symphony, Pentagon Brass, Mimika Ensemble, Brassroots, Phil Meadows, Cassie Kinoshi's SEED Ensemble, Duke Dumont Live on BBC Radio 1, BBC Introducing at the Manchester Jazz Festival, Bootleg Brass and Sons of Kemet.
As a composer, Chris has had works performed at The London Jazz Festival and broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 with his own band, Phaze Theory. He has released and produced solo recordings, as well as other Phaze Theory materials, through his label, PTC Record Label. He also hosts the PTC podcast, which is available on iTunes.
Chris draws particular inspiration from musicians who he feels explore the extreme depths of the human experience, such as Miles Davis, Led Zeppelin and Igor Stravinsky, to name a few. Outside his professional pursuits he also follows this theme, exploring the boundaries of the reality we find ourselves in through his interests in the esoteric traditions and methods of artists such as Austin Osman Spare and William Blake, and attempting to bring to light their influence in his own art.
